Play Whist online
Whist in the browser, for nothing: open a table, send the code to whoever is playing, and let a bot take any chair nobody fills.
- 4 players
- Bots for empty seats
- Free
- Nothing to download
A free account opens the table. Friends you invite join without one.
How Whist is played here
The rules this table deals by. Everybody at the table sees the same lines before the first hand.
- Four players, partners sitting opposite. No bidding at all.
- The dealer turns their own last card, and its suit is trump for the hand.
- Six tricks are the book and score nothing. Every trick above six is a point.
- Honours pay for holding the top trumps between you: four points for all four, two for three. Many tables leave it out, because it rewards the deal rather than the play.
How it works
- Open a table. It gets a short code of its own.
- Read the code out, or send the link. Anyone you send it to sits down as a guest, without an account.
- Deal once everyone is seated — or give each empty chair a bot and start now.
How multiplayer Whist works
Playing Whist online with other people, step by step: the code, the seats, the table rules, and what happens when somebody drops out.
Inviting the table
The host opens the table, which needs a free account, and shares its six-character code or the link from "Copy link". On a phone "Challenge a friend" stands beside it, and hands that invitation straight to Messenger, Instagram, Snapchat or whatever else you chat in. Everyone who follows it picks a name and sits down as a guest; nobody else needs an account.
Whist here is for exactly four. Everybody should be in the lobby before the first hand, because a game in progress cannot be joined. If the table is short, the host can press "Add an opponent" to seat a bot.
Partners and table rules
The order you sit down makes the partnerships: first and third against second and fourth, partners opposite each other.
The host chooses a game to 5 or to 7 points, and whether honours are scored, then presses "Start the game". Everyone sees the choices.
Your turn
The trump suit and the card the dealer turned stay in view all hand. When it is your turn, the table only lets you play cards that follow suit, or anything if you cannot.
The table counts each side's tricks against the book of six, so you can see at a glance how far your side has to go.
After each hand
The table shows what the hand paid: each side's tricks, how many were over the book, and honours if the table scores them.
The next hand starts once everyone has pressed "Ready for the next hand", and the deal passes to the left. There is no chat, but signalling with the cards you play works exactly as at a real table.
If somebody drops out
A player whose connection drops is shown as away and waited for twenty-five seconds. After that a bot plays their cards until they return, and opening the table again gives them their seat back. A player who presses Leave mid-game is replaced by a bot for the rest of it.
If the host leaves, hosting passes to whoever has been sitting longest. A table with no activity for six hours is cleared away.
Questions about playing Whist online
- How many can play Whist online here?
- 4 at one table. A bot can take any seat nobody fills, so a game never has to wait for somebody to turn up.
- Can I play Whist against the computer?
- Yes. Give any empty seat a bot and it plays like anyone else at the table, seeing only its own cards.
- Does it cost anything?
- No. Every table here is free, there are no ads, and nothing about you is sold or handed on.
- Do I need an account?
- Only to open a table. Joining one never needs an account — anyone you send the code to sits down as a guest.
- Does Whist work on a phone?
- Yes. It runs in the browser on a phone, a tablet or a computer, and there is nothing to install.
