How Tarneeb is played here

The rules this table deals by. Everybody at the table sees the same lines before the first hand.

  • Four players, partners sitting opposite. Thirteen cards each, the whole deck dealt.
  • Play goes to the right, as it does across the Levant. Starting to the dealer's right, each player bids seven or more, or passes. Once three have passed, the highest bidder names the trump suit and leads the first trick.
  • A contract that comes in scores the tricks actually taken. One that fails loses the amount bid — so bidding high buys nothing and costs everything.
  • A bid of thirteen, made, wins the whole game on the spot.

How it works

  1. Open a table. It gets a short code of its own.
  2. Read the code out, or send the link. Anyone you send it to sits down as a guest, without an account.
  3. Deal once everyone is seated — or give each empty chair a bot and start now.

How multiplayer Tarneeb works

Playing Tarneeb online with other people, step by step: the code, the seats, the table rules, and what happens when somebody drops out.

Inviting the table

The host opens the table, which needs a free account, and shares its six-character code or the link from "Copy link". On a phone "Challenge a friend" stands beside it, and hands that invitation straight to Messenger, Instagram, Snapchat or whatever else you chat in. Everyone who follows it picks a name and sits down as a guest; nobody else needs an account.

Tarneeb here is for exactly four players. Everybody should be in the lobby before the first hand, because a game in progress cannot be joined. If the table is short, the host can press "Add an opponent" to seat a bot.

Partners and the table rules

The order you sit down in decides the partnerships: first and third against second and fourth. Play goes to the right, as it does across the Levant.

The host chooses whether the game goes to 31 or 41, and whether the defence scores only when it beats the contract or its tricks either way. Everyone sees the choice.

The auction

When it is your turn to bid, the table asks "How many will you take?" and offers every number you may still bid, from one above the standing bid up to thirteen, and "Pass". Everybody sees each bid and who has passed.

When three have passed, the winner gets "Name the tarneeb". If all four pass, the cards go back in and the deal moves on.

The play and the score

The table only lets you play legal cards: follow suit if you can, anything if you cannot. It shows how many tricks the declaring side has taken against the number it promised.

All thirteen tricks are played. Then the table shows the bid, the tricks each side took and what each side scored, and the next hand starts once everyone has pressed "Ready for the next hand".

If somebody drops out

A player whose connection drops is shown as away and waited for twenty-five seconds. After that a bot plays their cards until they return, and opening the table again gives them their seat back. A player who presses Leave mid-game is replaced by a bot for the rest of it.

If the host leaves, hosting passes to whoever has been sitting longest. A table with no activity for six hours is cleared away.
